Christmas In Salzburg, is an iconic hand painted egg store which is located in Salzburg – home of all things Mozart and ‘The Sound Of Music’. When you arrive in Salzburg, do not miss visiting the Christmas In Salzburg egg store. It is a hidden gem for many, but once it has been found, people are obsessed with it – and always regret not buying more when they are there because they are so hard to get once you leave Austria.
I constantly receive inquiries about this egg store in Salzburg, because people didn’t buy enough and want to know how to buy the hand painted eggs for Easter and Christmas especially. The simple fact is, going there is the only way they can get what they want.
Christmas In Salzburg Hand Painted Egg Designs
Christmas In Salzburg is filled to the brim of every type of decorated egg you can imagine.
From the traditional Christmas decoration full of the amazing red colours, to Easter with it’s light purples and yellows, and the orange colours of Halloween – or even just general designs too…you can always find something here to satisfy what you’re looking for. And they are all so well designed that you likely have to stop yourself buying too many!
Each area seems to be colour co-ordinated so you really do know where you are based on that, which also makes for really pretty photos too. but take your time when you’re there. I visited twice when I was in Salzburg because I was blown away by how much there was to choose from!

Christmas In Salzburg doesn’t seem to have a website – though there is a facebook page, but it really doesn’t look to be an official one which is responsive. So unless you return to Salzburg – that’s the main way you’re going to get anything more than what you bought on your visit. Or if you know someone who is visiting, make sure you get them to stop by for you!
Christmas In Salzburg egg store is open year round, not just at Christmas so no matter when you’re there – it will be open. I traveled there during September and that’s when I first found it in 2015. It has been operating for over 20 years apparently though; so it has become a destination to stop in when visiting.
The hand painted eggs are so delicate and fragile. As they are hand painted, the effort that goes into making them is just amazing. There is a great amount of variety here as well which makes souvenirs easy to find for other people no matter what event or occasion you’re buying for.
Don’t Have Regret’s And Not Buy Something
On my visit to Christmas In Salzburg, I bought 2 eggs for the upcoming Christmas period. One for me and one for my sister. The designs were just lovely and they have a ribbon which is how they tie to the trees they hang on. Traveling with them was simple and easy; as all purchases are packaged in an egg carton and wrapped in paper – so they never broke. And I traveled quite a lot with them before I made it back to Australia.
Prices vary, but you can find eggs for as low as a few euros, and more expensive ones depending on the size and elaborateness of the design. Or if the season has passed and they have a lot to get rid of, things will be on sale too.
But even today, all of the photos I have seen show all the areas pretty full to the brim every time. They seem to just keep replenishing their stock all the time.
Christmas In Salzburg is such a huge store, and right when you think you saw it all – there is another little nook full of eggs! It is truly unreal and I could literally spend hours just photographing the eggs here.

When I was in Salzburg in September, I purchased about two dozen Christmas eggs. I love them, and they all made the trip back to the states in perfect condition.
I was told by the lady who packed the eggs for me a story about the reason these eggs are so special. In other words, they have symbolic meaning. I would like to gift some of these eggs at Christmas along with the story. However, I can’t remember the story of the eggs, nor can I find it on the Internet. Could you please share again the meaning of these eggs to the person who receives them?
Hi Mary, unfortunately the store doesnt have a website or place to contact them on. If you are hoping to purchase more I would contact the Visit Salzburg tourism board to see if they can provide the information or to find out if online orders are allowed through. It is very hard to find information which is why I published this post. If I make it back to Salzburg I will ask them about the options people have as many are wanting to buy more- they just aren’t able to get hold of them. It is a little frustrating that they don’t have social media accounts or anything to contact them on from what I can see, but it’s also nice that they don’t as it maintains their authenticity.

Hi Helen, i am not sure how you can purchase from Spain. This store don’t have a website or shipping – except if you buy in store and need them shipped home. For now, you will have to travel to Salzburg and visit the store unless they change that. Or get a friend to stop in if they are visiting the city. Sorry i couldnt help more!
Has anyone found a place to buy them in the US? My Mother-In-Law was in Carmel, CA and found a shop with them! The shop owner said there is a store in New York that imports and distributes them to other boutique stores, but I don’t have any additional information.
I came home with 2 dozen Easter theme ones, but would love to collect other holidays as well. I hope to make it back to the shop in Salzburg one day…

PS- aside from “normal” eggs, ornaments, etc they have other items if you look carefully. We bought the most amazing painted/gilded ostrich egg there! They’re toward the back, center, if you’re lucky enough.It sits on its cushion every Christmas holiday and will be treasured by my children and theirs! One of my very favorites are the eggs covered in fabric with the finest cross-stitch embroidery on it. Bringing an empty tin, coffee for example, is smart. You can stuff it with socks so it doesn’t take more space in your suitcase, then safely put eggs in it with pooffy toilet paper or shredded newspaper. Hand-carry, in that case! I’m envious of the person who gets there before my next visit!!!
Thank you so much for considering my request. When I was there, I bought these beautiful wooden Christmas ornaments. One was a church carved into the center of a star. I can’t wait to go back and take my husband with me this time. My first trip was for work but I enjoyed every minute I was there.
I ‘lived’ in Salzburg for a summer, when I was 19, 1966, to study with Carl Orff. That was my 2nd time in Salzburg. I have returned many, many times! It is one of two cities I would move to in a heartbeat. It has something so incredibly special, old yet not a ‘Williamsburg’.Whenever I am in the neighborhood, esp with teens, we spend a day or 2 in Salzburg. I understand the love!
PS A hint from my friend back in the 1990s: put the eggs end-to-end in a tube! Eggs don’t break end to end! She, and later I, sent them to the USA that way with perfect arrival! They store is very protective, of their business but then they travel far and wide to the various places where women make these professionally. Poland and Hungary in general are the places to search if you want them for business. So get your traveling shoes on, bring cash and a bunch of skinny mailing tubes as well! I was in hungary last week and saw them in various places in the countryside.

I was in Salzburg back in 2010. I fell in love with this place. I could have stayed all day if the group I was with would have let me. Unfortunately, I did not buy any eggs because I was concerned about them breaking. Instead, I bought the wooden cutout ornaments. They were beautiful, too.
Are you serious about going back to this store? I would love it if you could ship me some eggs. I will be more than glad to pay for them, the shipping, and some for your troubles. I have known several people who were going to Salzburg but have not been able to get anyone to go to the store for me. I know they will ship them to you but I don’t speak the language and wouldn’t know how to describe what I wanted. Additionally, the store will ship them for you but I’ve heard people say it has taken them 9 months or more to get them. Thank you!

Indeed: what a treasure-filled store that is! And you do not need to worry: the first time I visited this shop was either in 1993, or 1995! I return each time I visit Salzburg, and four years ago bought the most beautiful ones yet! Unfortunately one of them broke en route to San Francisco this week. Very sad – my daughter is heart-broken, but now I have an excellent excuse to return to what is,, for me, one of the most lovely and beautiful small cities in the world! Make SURE this is on your list And while you’re there be sure to find Lackner Kunsthandwerk – art-handcraft- (not easy to find) in the Badergasse 2 and see the incredible, tiny, detailed wood carvings / nativities. Each a treasure for generations and from generations. This one is close to the Mozart Haus. when coming back out of the store keep straight, through the covered alley,

I think I read they don’t have a website….just like me…my parents were just there but didn’t get eggs because they didn’t think they would make the return trip…..I could kick myself….does anyone know how ….or even if you can order them online?
As far as I am aware they don’t have a website that I could find. So I doubt it. I kept them in my carry on though when I bought some.
It’s a shame they don’t though because people would buy them. From memory if you bought them there and wanted them shipped they would do it, so maybe find someone who is going there and get them to ship to you?

We were there two weeks ago. It was fabulous!! Not only do they have thousands of hand-painted eggs, they also carry gorgeous hand painted blown glass ornaments! I brought lots back with me. I’m trying to negotiate a contract with them so that I can carry their eggs and ornaments in my store in Texas.
How awesome! That would be an amazing contract to have! I do remember seeing the glass ornaments. Everything was so pretty!

So sorry that I didn’t see your question earlier. This is my busiest season of the year so I am swamped. We lived in Germany for 7 1/2 years and we traveled (and I shopped) extensively. We return every 2 years to buy merchandise for my shop. I carry merchandise from Germany, England, Belgium, Holland, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, and Lithuania. I have year-round Christmas and I also design and make jewelry using gemstones and pearls I collected for 38 years! My husband also makes wonderful hand-made wood items. I was in Salzburg in December so I thought this was just a Christmas thing – cool that its open year round! I spent so long walking around and looking at all the eggs – I have so many photos. Did you see the travel-related ones? Several globe painted eggs. Wish I trusted myself to actually bring them home in one piece! haha

Believe it or not…I bought some eggs for a friend a t a garden store a long time ago because they reminded me of the storw…turns out they are from Austria….not sure if they are from the Christmas store…..will just wait and ask later when they unpack them for the season…fingers crossed

Kirsten ..do you have a receipt with a phone number? I bought a Salzburg hand-painted Christmas ball there…and it got broke yesterday 🙁 I brought it all the way home from a trip there in 2015. They don’t have a website which makes contacting them very hard, but hopefully someone does or has some something, even an email that people can use. It’s unfortunate they don’t have any social media because they are really missing out on global opportunities. My best advice would be to contact Salzburg tourism board and see if they have any information. That’s what I would do.
I have been to this store on two different occasions and am absolutely in love with it! I have shared this with everyone I know that plans to be in Salzburg. I just wish you could order online. I would love to have more eggs. I have Halloween, Easter and Christmas eggs in my collection
